This week my eldest turned 16 and I’m really not quite sure how that happened. I mean, I know how it happened, but wasn’t it only the other day he was moving around the floor on his back like a caterpillar? Wasn’t it only the other day he was 9 months, walking and climbing out of his cot? Wasn’t it only the other day he started kicking a soccer ball? Started kindergarten? Started high school? How can he possibly be 16?
It seems the older my kids get, the faster the years fly by. But wow what a ride every year is and turning 16 has been no exception.
My first born baby got his L’s, had his first driving lesson and picked his HSC subjects all in the space of 3 hours. I’m not sure if that’s an indication of what his 16th year is going to be like, jam packed and full of new experiences, but I do know it is the start of an exciting new chapter in his life that I can’t wait to share with him.
I’m looking forward to teaching him to drive and spending that one-on-one time together. Time that seems to be harder to find as he is getting older. Between his school work, part-time job and soccer commitments there isn’t much time left in his week to catch up with his mates, let alone his mum. But that’s OK. I’m happy to sneak those little moments in the kitchen when he wanders out and asks if I need help with dinner, or when he just comes and sits with me to chat (while drinking his 3rd oversized glass of milk and Milo for the afternoon). I love that he asks what he can help with when he sees me stressed or running around like a crazy person. I love that my gorgeous little boy has grown into a respectful and caring 16 year old young man embarking on the next stage of his journey. I couldn’t be a prouder mum!
Until next time …
