What better way to celebrate a 40th birthday than to ‘get your sparkle on’, which was exactly what my guests and I did! I wanted a theme that was fun, sparkly, pretty and even a little bit romantic, but I also wanted to add my own unique touches.
Handmade sparkly diamond shaped garland invitations set the scene for my celebration, inviting my guests to ‘get your sparkle on’. And boy did they get sparkly! They shimmered and shined, sparkled and glittered, with smiles and laughter filling my magically transformed backyard.
Twinkling fairy lights and over 250 tassels in shades of gold, mint, peach and lilac filled the marquee ceiling along with a gorgeous gold heart pinata with a flowing tassel tail. As my guests entered they were greeted with my hand drawn chalkboard style sign and invited to ‘Get your sparkle on here!’ Each guest then added a little more sparkle with glittered feathers for the ladies and glittered bow ties for the men.
A ‘Sparkle like Champagne’ sign on a wooden easel stood by the champagne bar with honeycomb balls scattered on the ground. Champagne and wine glasses were adorned with my handmade glittered heart glass charms, white ice buckets were filled with bubbly and a glass drink dispenser ensured everyone stayed hydrated with plenty of water. Recycled glass jars were brought to life with gold glitter and a single white gerbera in each. A number 40 covered in rose gold glitter was centred on the table and a shimmery, gold fabric tassel garland (made by a gorgeous friend of mine) hung behind the table.
My antique dressing table from when I was a little girl (and was my mum’s before that) was perfect for my dessert table. ‘Save room for dessert’ was handwritten across the mirror and a gold dipped feather garland added a touch of pretty. Butter iced vanilla cupcakes looked too good to eat in gorgeous gold baking cups and decorated with handmade glittered hearts and feather cake toppers. Homemade fortune cookies filled with personalised messages from myself added some fun to the evening.
An old gold frame (found at the local tip by a friend) was reinvented as a message board. Sweet little cards from Typo were hung on twine with glittered pegs ready for my guests to leave me some words of wisdom and messages of love and friendship. My gorgeous heart marquee light (a wonderful birthday surprise from my amazing friends) lit up the message board and added a touch of romance.
My husband and I (with some help from our fabulous friends and family) love to cook and entertain so it was only natural for us to cater for our 75 guests with a homemade menu (and a trio of Thermomixes!). Dips and crusty bread on arrival were followed by creamy cauliflower soup, mushroom risotto and butter chicken with rice. Everything was served in the stylish, Japanese inspired and eco-friendly Wasara range of plates and bowls along with glittered wooden cutlery.
It was definately one of my most treasured birthday celebrations, not only because it was just as I’d imagined (and I managed to pull it off with the help of my ‘army’) but mostly because I was surrounded by my gorgeous and forever supportive family and friends.
There are so many people to thank so I hope I don’t leave anyone out.
To my amazing husband and children … You are the loves of my life and my daily inspiration. My party would not have been possible without you all.
To my parents, sister and parents-in-law … You are always my ‘hands on’ army, doing anything and everything that needs to be done. You tidied, you cooked, you cleaned, and you set up a massive marquee, heaters, tables, furniture and strung hundreds of fairy lights! No words are enough to show my appreciation.
To the gorgeous Rachel, Kate & Melanie … Wow, I am so lucky to have you as my friends (and my little sister)! I absolutely loved our crafternoons – glittering, cutting, sticking, twisting and assembling decorations – filled with friendship and laughter. What is our next project????
To my photographer … Nikki Fitt you are amazing! The images you captured are stunningly beautiful and I love the shots you captured of our entire family together. Thank you so much!
